Get a Florida Identification Card

Due to the Real ID Act, the State of Florida has new documentation requirements. In order to obtain, renew or replace a Florida identification card, you must present original documents that prove your legal name, lawful presence, social security number and two forms of residential address.

To apply for a Florida identification card you will need to do the following:

  1. Gather your documents.
  2. Apply in person at any driver license office and bring the required documents and fees.
  3. Fee Information.

Florida statutes prohibit a person from holding both an identification card and driver license. If you hold a driver license or identification card from Florida or any other state, it must be surrendered (if it has not been lost or stolen) before a Florida identification card can be issued.

Starting in August 2017, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles began issuing a new, more secure Florida driver license and ID card. Previous driver license and ID cards will still be in use alongside the new credential until replaced or phased out. The new credential provides Floridians the most secure over-the-counter credential on the market today. Learn more about the new design here.

Individuals are only required to replace their current driver license or ID card if their current credential has reached its expiration or a required change is needed, such as a name or address change.

About Real ID

Are you REAL ID Compliant?

The federal REAL ID Act of 2005 set new standards for the issuance of state-issued driver licenses and identification cards. REAL ID was developed by the Department of Homeland Security in response to the 9/11 Commission recommendation that the U.S. improve its system for issuing identification documents.

The goal of REAL ID is to improve the integrity and security of state-issued driver licenses and identification cards in order to help fight terrorism and reduce fraud.

As a result, there are new identification requirements for obtaining a REAL ID compliant driver license or identification card.

REAL ID’s have a star in the upper right corner.

After 2014, federal agencies will begin to phase in enforcement of REAL ID compliant driver licenses and ID cards. Beginning May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States.
