Heavy Truck Information

A heavy truck is any motor vehicle with a net vehicle weight of more than 5,000 lbs. The registration is based on the gross vehicle weight (GVW). Heavy trucks are designed/used for the carriage of goods (pick-up truck) or equipped with a connective device for drawing a trailer (truck tractor/semi). This includes any motor vehicle that has had modifications such as a cabinet box, a platform, a rack, or other equipment added for the purpose of carrying goods (except for the personal effects of the passengers or an attached trailer).

A truck tractor is a motor vehicle which has four or more wheels and equipped with a fifth wheel for the primary purpose of drawing a semi-trailer that is attached by means of a fifth wheel. The tractor has no provision for carrying loads independently.

Renewal Information

Trucks weighing between 5,000 and 7,999 lbs.

Registrations for trucks weighing between 5,000 and 7,999 lbs. expire on the first registered owners birthday.

  • As long as you do not have any stops/holds or need to show proof of insurance for your registration, you can renew online.

Trucks weighing between 8,000 and 26,000 lbs.

Registrations for trucks weighing between 8,000 and 25,999 lbs. must be renewed by December 31st every year, unless otherwise noted (i.e. 6 month registrations).

  • Customers must show proof of Florida insurance or Florida insurance affidavit to renew.

Trucks weighing between 26,000 and 54,999 lbs.

Registrations for trucks weighing between 26,000 and 54,999 lbs. must be renewed by December 31st every year, unless otherwise noted (i.e. 6 month registrations).

  • Customers will need to show Certificate of Liability to renew. Your Certificate of Liability must meet the following requirements:
    • Insurance is current
    • Name on insurance must match name on registration. If the name is not the same, then you will need a lease agreement
    • Includes the VIN (unless “Any Auto” is shown on the form)
    • Certificate holder listed as FLHSMV (Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles). The address is listed as follows:
      • FLHSMV-BCVDS
        2900 Apalachee Parkway, Mail Stop 62
        Tallahassee, Florida 32399-0626”
    • Includes the cancellation clause
    • Includes 10,000 PIP coverage

Trucks weighing 55,000 lbs. and more

Registrations for trucks weighing 55,000 lbs. and more must be renewed by December 31st every year, unless otherwise noted (i.e. 6 month registrations).

Customers will need to show the following:

  • Certificate of Liability Insurance that meets the following requirements:
    • Insurance is current
    • Name on insurance must match name on registration. If the name is not the same, then you will need a lease agreement or SunBiz.
    • Includes the VIN (unless “Any Auto” is shown on the form)
    • Certificate holder listed as DHSMV (Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles)
    • Includes the cancellation clause
    • Includes 10,000 PIP coverage
  • Proof of filing Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) that meets the following requirements:
    • Form 2290 is required*
    • Legible 2290 stamp
    • Current tax period
    • VIN correct/unaltered
    • Name on Form 2290 must match name on registration. If the name is not the same, then you will need a lease agreement or SunBiz.
    • Unaltered EIN (Employer Identification Number)
    • Correct category listed for GVW (A-W)

*Form 2290 is not required if heavy truck was acquired less than 60 days

International Registration Plan (IRP)

The International Registration Plan (IRP) is for apportionable vehicles, defined as commercial motor vehicles engaged in interstate commerce (i.e., operating in more than one jurisdiction) with power units that meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 26,000 pounds; or
  • Have three or more axles, regardless of weight; or
  • Are used in combination with a trailer for a combined GVW that is over 26,000 pounds.

IRP is a reciprocal agreement, meaning that when the vehicle is registered in the jurisdiction where the motor carrier is based, the registration is valid in all the other IRP member jurisdictions. Additionally, the IRP registration is “apportioned” because the fees paid to the base jurisdiction are divided among all the member jurisdictions in which the vehicle(s) operated. IRP member jurisdictions are the the lower 48 states, the District of Columbia, and the 10 Canadian provinces.

International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) simplifies fuel tax reporting for interstate carriers. Commercial motor vehicles are IFTA qualified if they are used, designed, or maintained for the interstate transportation of persons or property and:

  • Have two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or registered GVW exceeding 26,000 pounds; or
  • Have three or more axles, regardless of weight; or
  • Are used in combination with a trailer, for a combined GVW or registered GVW in excess of 26,000 pounds.

IFTA is a reciprocal agreement, meaning that an IFTA license issued by the jurisdiction where the motor carrier is based, is valid in all the other IFTA member jurisdictions. Additionally, the licensee reports and pays all motor fuel taxes to the base jurisdiction, which handles distribution to all the other member jurisdictions in which the licensee travelled and incurred motor fuel use tax liability. IFTA member jurisdictions are the lower 48 states and the 10 Canadian provinces.
