Important Information

• Deployed and need to renew your driver license

  • If your license is scheduled to expire while you are deployed or stationed outside Florida, you are encouraged to renew before you deploy or move. Florida drivers may renew a license up to 18 months prior to the expiration date printed on the license. If you are out-of-state with a digital image license (does not have a blue sticker or no-photo), and interested in renewing your license by mail, visit flhsmv.gov and select Military Personnel-Need Florida License from the drop-down menu to request a renewal packet be sent to you by mail or e-mail.

• Special Veteran Designation on your FL Driver License

  Honorably discharged veterans have the opportunity to place a veteran designation on their Florida driver license or identification card by presenting proof of an honorable discharge from any branch of the armed forces to a driver license office. The designation will display the word “Veteran” on your ID/driver license. The new designation makes it easier for the veteran to take advantage of discounts or preferences offered by various retailers by simply presenting an official state driver license or identification card. Proof of an honorable discharge can be either of the following and photocopies are acceptable: · DD Form 214 · Verification of Service letter from the United States Department of Veteran Affairs · DD Form 2 Military Retired ID Card · 100% Disabled Veteran Card or Letter Proof of veteran status documents issued before 1950 may be accepted with or without verbiage indicating the customer was honorably discharged. Veterans who need to obtain a copy of their DD-214 may request it through the National Archives, which provides information on how to make the request online at www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/.

• Renew your driver license online

  If you are not eligible to renew online and hold a Class E driver license, you may be eligible to receive a military extension card that extends the expiration date of the license you currently hold until 90 days after you permanently return to Florida or are discharged from the military. You may delay the purchase of a driver license renewal by requesting this free extension card. If you have a Commercial Driver License, your license must be renewed, we cannot extend Commercial licenses. • Register your emergency contact information.

  By registering your emergency contacts into the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ Emergency Contact Information system, you provide law enforcement officials with information on who they should contact during an emergency, such as a crash. The Department stores the information in a secure database that only law enforcement officers can access. Even if you previously registered your contacts, we recommend that you update the registry if your contacts change or if they move or change their phone number. Not only should service members make sure to register your emergency contacts, but also it’s a good idea to make sure loved ones update their information as well, especially during a deployment if the service member is the emergency contact. Click here to register your emergency contact information. Anyone who has a Florida driver license or ID card can register his/her emergency contact information in the system. Children as young as five years old are eligible for a Florida ID card.
