Hillsborough County Tax Collector Provides Resources to Prepare for Hurricane Helene
Tampa, FL — September 25, 2024
As Hurricane Helene approaches, the Hillsborough County Tax Collector’s Office urges residents to take steps to ensure the safety of themselves and their loved ones. One important aspect of preparation is securing essential identifying documents, whether you are evacuating or planning to shelter in place.
Key Documents to Have Ready: Residents are reminded to keep important documents easily accessible and protected in case of an evacuation or emergency. These documents include:
- Driver’s license or state-issued ID
- Passport
- Social Security cards
- Birth certificates
- Insurance policies (home, auto, health)
- Deeds or leases
- Recent utility bills (to prove residence)
Additionally, with new state requirements regarding proof of residential address taking effect on October 1, 2024, it is important to be aware of changes when providing documentation for driver’s license or ID issuance. Under the new rules from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, residents unable to provide two documents proving their residential address may use a Certification of Address form. However, the form now requires additional steps:
The certifier (the person providing proof of address) must either:
- Accompany the customer to an office to sign the form in the presence of an examiner; or
- Sign the form in front of a notary.
The certifier must also provide two documents proving their own residential address, one of which must be a deed, mortgage agreement, lease agreement, or a similar document.
Office Closures and Online Services: As the storm approaches, the safety of our community and our team remains our highest priority. For this reason, the Hillsborough County Tax Collector’s Office will be closing at 12PM on Wednesday, September 25th and will remain closed on Thursday, September 26th. However, online services will remain available at hillstax.org.
“Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our community and our team members,” said Nancy Millan, Hillsborough County Tax Collector. “As we brace for Hurricane Helene, we want to remind everyone to secure their essential documents and stay informed. We’re also here as a resource, ensuring our online services remain accessible for our customers during this time.”
